Whipped Cocoa Butter | Easy DIY Body Butter Recipe for Dry Itchy Skin

Whipped Cocoa Butter is one of my favorite recipes. This body butter is particularly great for skin issues, including dry itchy skin, stretch marks, scars and dark spots. It is simple to make, comes out creamy and smells amazing without any artificial scents. Most importantly it is packed with vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants that work wonders on the skin.

With the weather cooling down it is the perfect time to start moisturizing the skin regularly. For me personally, as soon as the weather changes I can feel a difference on my skin and I love having self care items available to start using right away that complement the change of seasons.

Cocoa Butter is the base of this recipe. The Cocoa Butter I use is unrefined and 100% pure with no additives in it. It is a beautiful tan color and extremely fragrant naturally, it smells like delicious chocolate. It is very beneficial to most skin types and has the ability to penetrate the layers of skin, which deeply moisturizes it and helps the skin retain moisture.

Cocoa butter is commonly found in store bought creams and lotions for moisturizing skin, diminishing scars and preventing stretch marks, however so little of the actual cocoa butter is used in these formulas so it does not compare. When you use the concentrated butter itself in your body butters you can really see how effective it is for your skin health.

Jojoba Oil is in this recipe as well. It is a wonderful, golden oil (actually a liquid wax) that is very similar to the oil produced by the skin naturally, called sebum. Because of this, Jojoba oil can help regulate the skin’s production of sebum. It is a nice option for those with oily and acne prone skin and is actually a safe option for all skin types. Jojoba is native to the southwestern USA and is pressed from the Jojoba plant seeds. Jojoba has antibacterial properties due to its high iodine content and is anti-inflammatory so it can help mitigate skin damage from the elements. It will also help stimulate the production of collagen, which is a property that many of the best skin foods possess.

Coconut Oil first gained popularity as an all-around beauty and health oil around twenty years ago. Since then, it’s still going strong due to its beneficial properties. Its skin-protecting antioxidants help reverse damage and create a protective barrier against the elements. It has a lovely natural aroma and sinks into the skin quickly without leaving a greasy residue. It pairs nicely with Cocoa Butter in moisturizing the skin so I included it in this body butter as well.

Vanilla Bean is a fun addition to this recipe that I personally love. It does not particularly have skin benefits however it adds the natural fragrance of vanilla which is a lovely, calming smell. It also leaves the cute speckles of the vanilla bean in the butter which is a nice touch. This is an optional ingredient so if it is not for you then simply leave it out.

Whipped Cocoa Butter Recipe

  • 4 oz Cocoa Butter (unrefined)
  • 4 oz Jojoba Oil
  • 4oz Coconut Oil
  • Pulp of one vanilla bean (optional)
  1. Place your cocoa butter, jojoba oil and coconut oil in a double boiler
  2. Melt these on low heat until completely liquid
  3. Cool in the fridge for about an hour, until the mixture is just firm but still soft
  4. Massage the vanilla bean with your hands to loosen the pulp and making cutting easier
  5. Gently and slowly slice open the bean with a knife and scrape out the pulp
  6. Add the pulp to the body butter
  7. Stir it up with a mixing spoon
  8. Whip it for about five minutes on medium speed until it is combined and nice and fluffy
  9. Scoop it in your favorite jars and it’s ready to go
  10. Use on your skin after a shower or bath or throughout the day as needed
