DIY Acne Spot Cream | Home Remedy for Acne with Only 4 Natural Ingredients

Today I am excited to share a home remedy for acne or breakouts. This DIY Acne Spot Cream is made with 4 completely natural ingredients. It is simple to make and a little goes a long way, so you can make one batch and use it for months. When you have a blemish or a pimple popping up, simply dab this on and leave it on for a couple hours or overnight. This will help it dry out and heal quickly. It can also be used as a topical treatment anywhere on the body, including for back acne (bacne) and butt acne.

Home Remedy for Acne and Other Skin Irritations

When you think of home remedies, you may think of things like a hot tea with lemon juice and honey for a cough or a sore throat. For acne, it can seem like only an over the counter or prescription acne treatment product from the drugstore will work. You might be surprised to learn that most of the results of Clearasil, Noxzema or similar products are easy to obtain from a DIY skin care recipe made right in your kitchen.

This formula actually has many more uses than just an acne lotion. It’s a great multipurpose natural first aid ointment that can help soothe a rash or hives (especially heat rash in this upcoming hot summer!). It can help with other skin irritation such as a fungal infection, dermatitis, skin chafing, razor burn, and ingrown hairs commonly experienced with facial hair or beards. It’s powerful yet gentle and great for both men and women, and it is safe for babies and kids.

Natural Ingredients

Here is a little more information on the four natural ingredients in this recipe. They are all safe for all skin types: dry, oily, sensitive, and acne-prone:

Zinc Oxide Powder is a white, odorless fine powder that is naturally occurring in the mineral zincite. It is considered to be a gentle, non-irritating, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory cosmetic powder.

Keeping zinc oxide powder around the house to make homemade zit cream is cost-effective for many household uses: a talc-free baby powder or body powder, diaper rash cream, foot powder, or deodorant. These are just some of the recipes you can try with it. Many customers have called it a miracle for body and foot odor, working when nothing else would help. It’s also very popular to include in homemade mineral sunscreens, which we discuss more in this post.

The Zinc Oxide Powder we source and sell is from the USA and is pharmaceutical grade which means it is certified by the United States Pharmacopeia and subject to FDA regulation. It has to be 99.99% pure to meet their strict criteria. Only 5% of the entire skin care industry can meet these high standards.  It is also non nano and non micronized, which means it will not enter the bloodstream or absorb into cells. Instead, it sits on the skin to form a protective barrier against the elements and outside factors.

Unrefined Shea Butter is a nutrient-rich cosmetic butter packed with vitamins and antioxidants. It deeply moisturizes the skin to help soothe and repair dry, itchy, cracked skin and maintain a healthy glow.

Some assume because it’s so rich and buttery that it wouldn’t come close to being included in any “best cream for acne” lists, however this is not the case. Unrefined shea butter is actually non comedogenic and does not clog pores. Even more surprising is that shea butter has a naturally high level of Vitamin A. Products such as Retin-A (tretinoin) are hot sellers because they contain Vitamin A to help increase cell turnover and collagen production, which helps with both acne treatment and wrinkle prevention. Shea butter is a great natural alternative to these products, and also helps nourish your skin with its high level of nutrients which can help prevent any unwanted acne scars or dark spots in the long run.

Jojoba Oil is another superstar for acne-prone skin. The chromium, zinc, and iodine content of the oil make it a natural antimicrobial. Because it’s so similar to the skin’s own produced oil, called sebum, it helps stop the skin from overproducing oil, which can contribute to further breakouts. It is also extremely high in Vitamins C, D, and E, which all promote rapid skin healing.

Camphor Essential Oil has been used for a long time as an antiseptic and muscle soothing liniment. You may recognize its strong scent from congestion relief products as well. This makes it great for clearing the sinuses and producing a calming effect to your nerves when inhaled.  It can also help clear different types of infections (including malassezia, a type of fungal acne) and helps calm redness on irritated skin. This makes it a perfect addition to this recipe and is why I chose it.
